Deadline Long Exercise (part 1)

OK. This is it. Again.
Next Monday 5 November, at 12.00 o'clock, every student must have his/hers documentation ready to be presented to the rest of the Unit. This means:
a) Diagnosis Spiral-bound book A-3, ready to be handed in after oral presentation (remember you'll be assessed for the quality of your work. So be careful and take your time to select the most appropiate lay out, to print, to complete information, to conclude, etc.)
b) 3D [Model+Map] on the center table of our classroom (digital models should be printed on an independant panel apart from the A-3 diagnosis book mentioned before. Anyway, we insist in our recomendation: physical models).
c) .ppt oral presentations lodged on classroom's computer (remenber 3 minutes. We'll try to be stict with this point. Prepare yourself, prepare what you are going to say and how you are going to say it.)
As we are still quite a few, again,  we'll make groups of five students that will present their work, and after they've finished, Joaquín and I will briefly comment yours proposals.
Remember: Incomplete or out of time proposals will be penalished in our assessment. So take your time and complete each of the three demands made for this part of the exercise.

You might have noticed we like to publish some general numbers about how the Unit is working. Each one of you might extract his/her own conclusions. Here they are:

Students in Unit: 38
Medium assistance during exercise: 76,8%

Days dedicated to comment individually students proposals: 4
Students with 0 presentations of their work in progress: 14
Students with 1 presentation of their work in progress: 14
Students with 2 presentations of their work in progress: 9
Students with 3 presentations of their work in progress: 1

Proposals pre-assessed as highly relevant: 7

What is most surprising is that there are 14 students, something like nearly 40% of the Unit, that have presented nothing at all during these last weeks. We don't even know what site they are planning to work on! Amazing.

Dealing with sites, your final selection points out Castellón as your favorite. These are your choices:
No choice at all: 14 students ????
Castellón Airport: 12 students
Seseña Residential Development: 6 students
Niemeyer Center Avilés: 6 students

Today we have supervised the proposals of 17 of you. It's been quite long and tiring for all of us. But we hope you have become aware of the differences between the work of those of you who try to work daily and present their ideas nearly every day, and those who don't. It's pretty obvious.

Anyway, good luck for everyone. Sharp at 12.00 on Monday, we start presentations.

Short Exercise Results

We are not allowed to publish any kind of individual qualification. So we'll have to communicate each of you, your results in our first short exercise next Monday (or either by a personal e-mail).

Anyway here are a few general numbers and conclusions about our assessment.

First of all, we have to remember some of the most important criteria we've followed:
- Not presenting any proposal at all is assessed (obviously) as a: 0
- Maximum qualification for Incomplete Proposals (absence of one or several of the documents demanded) is: 4
- Maximum qualification for Proposals (Complete or Incomplete) presented after deadline is: 4

Now, general results (38 students in our unit):

1 sobresaliente (9)
2 notables (8)
3 notables (7)
5 aprobados (6)
8 aprobados (5)
10 suspensos (4)
3 suspensos (3)
6 suspensos (0)

A few conclusions that might be of your interest:
- Exactly 50% of the Unit did not obtain the minimum qualification required in this this first exercise. Too much!
- Most of the student's proposals that did not pass this short exercise, either didn't exist at all, or were incomplete or handled out of time. What did you expect?
- Most of the student's proposals that were complete and on time have obtained at least a 5 as qualification. It's not that difficult!

Finally, some advices for the rest of the semester:
- It is obviously compulsory to complete all exercises as demanded and on time to reach minimum qualification required for each level.
- If you do so, and you work daily, you correct your different documents in progress in class every day you are invited to, and you try to make a well developed, consistent and creative proposal, you'll confortably reach the pass mark.
- For all those qualified with aprobado (5), ... careful: your exercises have been assessed as JUST enough. It is advisable that you make a greater effort on the long exercise. Both in terms of quantity and quality of your work.
- For all those qualified with notables and sobresaliente (7-9), ... congratulations: continue like this and you should complete a brilliant semester.
- For all of you: long exercise doubles the value of short one, in the final result of your semester qualification.

That's more or less all. We'll see your Site 3D analysis next Monday and your Final entries for the first part of the long exercise on November de 5 (thiis entry is absolutely compulsory and will be assessed independently as the one just exposed). Good luck.

The Pruitt-Igoe Myth

Absolutely delightful film we saw today. I hope you all enjoyed it as much as I did. Again.
And one last advise we heard at the end: "... [when you design] remember Pruitt-Igoe."
